When Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk returns to Kiewarra for the funerals, he is loath to confront the people who rejected him twenty years earlier. But when his investigative skills are called on, the facts of the Hadler case start to make him doubt this murder-suicide charge.
And as Falk probes deeper into the killings, old wounds start bleeding into fresh ones. For Falk and his childhood friend Luke shared a secret… A secret Falk thought long-buried… A secret which Luke’s death starts to bring to the surface.
The town of Kiewarra is in crisis! They are in an extreme drought, and one of its citizens and his family are found dead by an apparent murder/suicide. After being away for twenty years, Aaron Falk receives a message to be at the funeral of his childhood friend Luke, his wife Karen, and son Billy.
Luke lied. You lied. Be at the Funeral.
There is so much to love about this book. It is a cleverly crafted story with not only one, but two mysteries to solve. The characters are extremely well-developed and all have their secrets, adding another intriguing layer to this story. Luke and the death of his family is being investigated to see if it really is a murder/suicide. While these deaths are being investigated, the unsolved death of Luke and Aaron’s childhood friend, Ellie, has been brought back to the surface to see if there is a possible connection. I thought Jane Harper’s use of sporadic italicized sections to reveal the character’s past, secrets, and inner thoughts was unique and very effective. As this book got further and further into the story I was unable to put it down.
I loved this book! I had a suspicion or two and was partially correct, but not really. I didn’t put the whole mystery together until it was revealed. I had a couple of “Ohhhhh” moments. I found it a fun and unpredictable read, which is just what I look for in a good mystery. I’m looking forward to the second book in this series!
