First Chapter/First Paragraph ~Teaser Tuesday – Dangerous Crossing by Rachel Rhys

Happy Tuesday!

Today I am linking up with Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea who hosts a post every Tuesday to share the First Chapter/First Paragraph of the book you are currently reading.

I’m also once again joining The Purple Booker with Teaser Tuesday. It’s easy to join – just grab your current read, open it to a random page, and share two teaser sentences being careful not to include any spoilers.

I just recently finished this book…

First Chapter/First Paragraph

4 September 1939, Sydney, Australia

Sandwiched between two policemen, the woman descends the gangplank of the ship. Her wrists are shackled in front of her and the men grip fast to her arms, but her back is ramrod straight, as if being held in place by the flagpole at the ship’s prow. She wears a forest-green velvet suit, the fashionably slim skirt skimming the top of her calves, and black stockings that end in green leather shoes with a delicate heel. Around her shoulders is a rust-colored fox-fur stole, the head hanging down at the front as if it is watching how her shoes kick up the dust as she walks. The outfit is far too warm for the seventy-degree heat, and the small crowd of onlookers feel grateful for their cool cotton clothes.

“Quick, hide me,” Lily says, stepping behind the others as she spies Ida on the other side of the dining room in the brown dress she’d earlier fished out from her case. But when Ida eventually turns to walk off in the direction of the cabins, it’s remorse Lily feels rather than relief. What would it have cost me to be kind? she reprimands herself.

Dangerous Crossing by Rachel Rhys

Goodreads Synopsis

1939: Europe is on the brink of war when young Lily Shepherd boards an ocean liner in Essex, bound for Australia. She is ready to start anew, leaving behind the shadows in her past. The passage proves magical, complete with live music, cocktails, and fancy dress balls. With stops at exotic locations along the way—Naples, Cairo, Ceylon—the voyage shows Lily places she’d only ever dreamed of and enables her to make friends with those above her social station, people who would ordinarily never give her the time of day. She even allows herself to hope that a man she couldn’t possibly have a future with outside the cocoon of the ship might return her feelings.

But Lily soon realizes that she’s not the only one hiding secrets. Her newfound friends—the toxic wealthy couple Eliza and Max; Cambridge graduate Edward; Jewish refugee Maria; fascist George—are also running away from their pasts. As the glamour of the voyage fades, the stage is set for something sinister to occur. By the time the ship docks, two passengers are dead, war has been declared, and Lily’s life will be changed irrevocably.
