Book Review – Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

Goodreads Synopsis:

A compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter’s role in an absurd world.

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she’s a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she’s a disgrace; to design mavens, she’s a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette’s intensifying allergy to Seattle – and people in general – has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence – creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter’s role in an absurd world.

My Opinion:

What a cute, humorous story!

A large part of this story is told through letters and interviews, which is a format that I usually shy away from. I listened to the audio version of this book, but also had the kindle version so I ended up using them in combination.

Bernadette Fox is a hoot! She has social anxiety so she prefers not to leave her house and has an assistant in India that she refers to for everything. Elgin Branch is Bernadette’s husband. He works for Microsoft and is a bit concerned about his wife’s recent behavior. Bee is Bernadette and Elgin’s daughter. She has received all S’s on her report card and her parents have promised her a graduation present for perfect marks. She wants a family trip to Antarctica!

I enjoyed parts of this book more than others. I think the audio version is fantastic! It really lifted the story and helped bring it to life. This book is being adapted for the big screen and is scheduled to be released in 2019. I have no idea how the story line (with all of its letters, backstory, and so on) will be turned into something that makes sense, but I am looking forward to seeing the movie magic.

I am thinking of listening to more audio books. What are some of your favorites?

  1. I still need to read this Tina, terrific review! I’ve just started getting into audiobooks and so far I’m finding non fiction is working really well for me. My favourite so far has to be Maggie O’Farrell’s memoir I Am, I Am, I Am which was hugely emotional! 😢

  2. I read this a couple of years ago and from what I remember, your review is exactly how I felt. I have been listening to a lot of cozy mysteries and have been enjoying them. You are over halfway there for your 20 books. Good job.
