Goodreads Synopsis –
It’s Livia’s fortieth birthday and tonight she’s having a party, a party she’s been planning for a long time. The only person missing will be her daughter, Marnie.
But Livia has a secret, a secret she’s been keeping from Adam, her husband, until the party is over. Because how can she tell him that although she loves Marnie, she’s glad their daughter won’t be there to celebrate with her?
Adam is determined everything will be just right for Livia and the party is going to be perfect… until he learns something that will leave him facing an unbearable decision.
My Opinion –
This is a perplexing, secretive, frustrating read!
Livia has been planning her 40th birthday party for years. In fact she has been planning it ever since she and her husband Adam were married. It is to be equivalent to the wedding she never had. While excited she is also harboring a huge secret and she is not the only one.
Adam’s secret was far more stressful than Livia’s. I could not believe that he was holding out and not telling his wife what was going on until after the party. I kept thinking – come on Adam, tell her!!! Ugh…what was he thinking??
I think the audiobook helped to bring some needed lift to this story. Adam’s narrator in particular stood out to me. As the story progressed it was clear he was distressed by the whole situation, although he wasn’t quite stressed enough to come clean to his wife (big eye roll).
This book was good, but not great. I’m glad I opted for the audio version rather than reading it and I look forward to more from B.A. Paris in the future!

I also thought the book was frustrating, and I kept yelling at the characters, since their secrecy was so unneeded in many instances. Great review.
